Does the Qurʾān resolve any of the mysteries found in the Scriptures of the People of the Book?
One of the mysteries in Israelite history that the Qurʾān clarifies is why Prophethood suddenly ceased among the Israelites nearly two thousand years ago. Prior to this, it is well known that whenever an Israelite Prophet died, he was succeeded by another, and not a single day went by without a Prophet among the Children of Israel. This is why Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) said: “The Children of Israel were governed by the Prophets; whenever a Prophet died, another Prophet succeeded him.”1 This sudden interruption in Prophethood is only justified by the emergence of Islam, as Prophethood, along with the Law and dominion on earth, was transferred from the Children of Israel to the Muslim nation, which became the best nation raised up for mankind. The Children of Israel had been warned by their Prophets that, as a punishment for their wickedness, Allāh would grant His kingdom to another nation. Indeed, Allāh was not concerned by the Jews’ rejection of the guidance He had sent, for He had already raised a faithful nation that would truly appreciate its worth. Allāh says: {Those were the ones to whom We gave the Scripture, wisdom, and Prophethood. But if these ˹pagans˺ disbelieve in this ˹message˺, then We have already entrusted it to a people who will never disbelieve in it} (Qurʾān 6:89).
