Is it possible that we will discover in the future how the universe emerged?

Atheists often claim that future scientific developments will offer a way out of their current dilemma concerning the origin of the universe. In reality, however, this is a classic example of a fallacious appeal to the future—one of the most common logical fallacies into which atheists fall. It is as though they are saying, “We will continue to disbelieve, in the hope that some future scientific discovery will eventually support the creed of disbelief.” Funnily enough, they reject belief in God on the mere hope that science may one day provide supporting evidence—evidence that, if it ever appears, will likely come long after they are gone. In other words, this is nothing more than an escape into the future, where atheists claim that their worldview will soon be vindicated, and that their victory is just around the corner because the evidence is supposedly “in the making.” Undeniably, this is a tactic commonly used by pseudoscience, and it is likely that future generations of atheists will continue to fall into the same trap. Allāh says: {As for those who dispute about Allāh after He is ˹already˺ acknowledged ˹by many˺, their argument is futile in the sight of their Lord. Upon them is wrath, and they will suffer a severe punishment} (Qurʾān 42:16).

It is in no way wise to resort to speculation and delusion in order to avoid interpreting the phenomenon of the emergence of a fine-tuned universe within its proper context—one that clearly points to the Creator. Without a doubt, logic and reason affirm that the material universe is the effect of an intelligent Creator who perfected all things. Therefore, denying this truth is nothing but a suspension of the mind’s function. For if we continue to reject the Creator despite the abundance of logical proofs and sound arguments for His existence, then when will we finally submit to Him? On the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers will regret that they neither listened attentively to the Prophets nor used their intellect to understand their message. Allāh says: {And they will lament, “If only we had listened and reasoned, we would not be among the residents of the Blaze!”} (Qurʾān 67:10). Here, listening is given precedence because it is the prerequisite for receiving guidance. Without the Prophets’ message, human beings cannot arrive at the truth solely through intellect and common sense.

As explained earlier, scientists of all worldviews agree that the physical constants of our universe are exquisitely fine-tuned for life. In other words, our universe could not support life if even one of these constants had a slightly different value. For instance, the strength of gravity must be set with extreme precision—if it were altered by even a billionth of a gram, heavier or lighter, the universe would have followed a completely different trajectory. Remarkably, every alternative trajectory would lead to a universe incapable of supporting life. Ours is the only known configuration that is life-permitting. Clearly, such fine-tuning cannot be dismissed as a mere lucky accident. Even atheist scientists acknowledge that our surroundings are far from being the result of a fortuitous concourse of atoms. The picture of the world presented by existing physical theories reveals arrangements of individual elements that defy the odds of having originated by chance. Thus, the question remains: does science truly support atheism—or does it point to the existence of God? Indeed, true science does not produce atheists; rather, it humbles minds and drives hearts to prostrate before Allāh. Now, dear readers, I invite you to let your intellect be your guide.
